Queer Films to Look Out For at the 2018 Oscars

Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival aims to capture the everyday and extraordinary stories of queer filmmakers. Queer film is experiencing groundbreaking moments in motion pictures. In 2017, Moonlight took home the Academy Award for Best Picture – a huge victory for queer film!

Yesterday, Oscar nominations for the 90th annual awards were announced from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif. Academy President John Bailey was joined by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis to reveal the nominees in 24 categories.

This year, we are rooting for two queer films in particular…

Call Me by Your Name

Nominated for Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Song.

A delicate love story between Elio a 17-year old, and Oliver, a doctoral student. What blossoms is a sweet, summer romance that will change both of their lives forever.

A Fantastic Woman

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

The film centers on Marina, a transgender nightclub singer. After enduring a hardship, she must fight to defend herself. Transgender actress Daniela Vega plays the title character.

BPM (Beats Per Minute)

Set in the early 1990’s, BPM profiles Act Up-Paris activists who are fighting with all their willpower to change the attitudes of how AIDS is viewed.

Battle of the Sexes

The film centers on a paramount tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Tennis takes a back seat to King coming to terms with her own sexuality.
