Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival invites you to join us for the 14th annual celebration of queer film from around the world. Fairy Tales hosts the largest queer film festival in Alberta with audience numbers over 2500 patrons per year, highlighting the diversity of gay, lesbian, bisexual, two-spirited and transgendered film and video making in documentary, shorts and features.
Our 2011 Festival screened more than 65 works from over 25 countries. Highlights in 2011 included LOOSE CANNONS (MINE VAGANTI) by Ferzan Oztepek, the thought-provoking and moving documentary GEN SILENT by Stu Maddux, best feature of the festival, TO FARO (MEIN FREUND AUS FARO) by Nana Nuel, THE ADVOCATE FOR FAGDOM by Angélique Bosio, OFF BEAT by first-time Director Jan Gassmann and a special key note address by Dan Savage, creator of IT GETS BETTER.
Media coverage of the Festival has included features and artist profiles in all major media outlets in Calgary including: the Calgary Herald, the Calgary Sun, BeatRoute Magazine, Gay Calgary, Outlooks Magazine, FFWD Weekly, CBC Radio One, 660 New Talk Radio, CJSW Radio, X92.9 Alternative Rock, and on television stations: CTV, CBC, Citytv, SHAW TV and OMNI. We also receive national coverage from XTRA!, and OUTtv, and the Canada.com network.
The Festival is produced by Fairy Tales Presentation Society, a non-profit charitable arts organization dedicated to showcasing the highest quality and most diverse films produced by and about the lives of queers in Alberta, Canada and around the globe.
A jury of film professionals and community representatives choose awards for film and video makers. Awards are given for both Canadian and international work. Our three audience awards are open to all works presented at the Festival and are chosen by post-screening balloting.
