    REELS ON WHEELS

REELS ON WHEELS is an initiative of Fairy Tales that is geared towards the exhibition of films to organizations in the Calgary area that are interested in GLBTTQ issue education. It is also a project that strives to increase the visibility of queer films and artists in areas that lack accessibility to GLBTTQ work.  REELS ON WHEELS ends on December 31, 2010 but due to the generous support of the TELUS Community Board, the project will become OUTReels.

Thanks to TELUS we will continue screening within the Calgary Community and will launch the Youth Anti-homophobia PSA Competition in 2011.

    Upcoming Free Public Screenings:

    December 2010

     World AIDS Day - Wednesday - December 1, 2010 -  7:30pm at Club Sapien

ROW, in partnership with the AIDS Calgary HEAT Program, is proud to present:

    http://about.telus.com/community/

SEX POSITIVE - a documentary that explores the life of Richard Berkowitz, a revolutionary gay S&M- hustler-turned-AIDS activist in the 1980s, whose incomparable contribution to the invention of safe sex has never been aptly credited.

Berkowitz emerged from the epicenter of the epidemic as a community leader, demanding a solution to the problem before anyone else would pay attention. However, it was not Berkowitz' voice alone that sparked contention.

Dr. Joseph Sonnabend, a controversial virologist and AIDS doctor, postulated that AIDS was more complicated than just a new virus. With Sonnabend's theory in tow, Berkowitz fought, alongside beloved activist and musician Michael Callen, for safer sex practices without giving up on sex altogether.

SEX POSITIVE explores the explicit bravery of this unrecognized triumvirate, and their dire quest to save lives in the midst of unwavering dissent. Now destitute and alone, Mr. Berkowitz tells his story to a world who never wanted to listen.

Through the eyes of Mr. Berkowitz, the audience is made witness to a graphic testimony of sex, death, and betrayal, while placing the invention of ‘safe sex’ in a fresh and compelling context.

    Why?

Our mission is to promote diversity education and help build the foundation for safe and supportive environments. We are here to not only educate and further awareness on GLBTTQ issues, but also to generate discussion that will stimulate, inspire and foster compassion and understanding. Too often, people are marginalized because of differences.

This is an exciting opportunity to create a disarming environment that pairs education and entertainment.

    Want to partner with ROW?

    • Reels on Wheels can help to identify the GLBTTQ educational issues that your organization would benefit from.
    • ROW will then help determine a film that would stimulate discussion on that issue.
    • ROW will provide the film and all necessary equipment for the screening.
    • ROW will work with you to program a post-film discussion either with a guest speaker or a discussion facilitator.

     What will you do?

    • Provide the venue for screening.
    • Publicize the event.
    • Liaise with ROW Project Coordinator on all other components of the screening.

If you are interested in hosting a screening or desire more information, please contact ROW Project Coordinator here.

REELS ON WHEELS is generously funded by:
