Fairy Tales will be presenting this film at the 2010 Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival.

This year the final night of our festival (June 4th) will be a showcase of all the artists under the rainbow that fall under our mandate working in diverse mediums. The event will take place at the Uptown Stage and Screen (612 8th Ave SW) and will be the first step towards our evolution into a full, diverse and rich cultural arts festival over the next few years.

Selections will be made by committee and honorariums will be offered to the artists chosen. Each selected artist will be featured during the gala and will offer the audience a taste of their work.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. Please Submit (use 12 point helvetica, ariel, or times type.): 1 Page  (no more than 600 words): Name, Past Achievements / Credits, Description of Proposed Artistic Undertaking, briefly include (if applicable) timeline, conceptual framework, execution plan

2. Page 2 (no more than 500 words): Artist Biography, Artist Statement Preview of your work.

To save trees and time, all of the following is submitted via email.

1. Musicians: please submit no more than 2 full songs via sound bytes or mp3 files. Please include the lyrics and instrumentation to your music in your submission.

2. Visual Artists: please submit a sample of your portfolio and description of medium

3. Spoken Word Artists: please submit your writing sample or performance idea

4. Theatre Artists: please submit your monologue/script that you will perform

5. All submissions must be received by noon on April 15th, 2010.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Each selected artist will be given approximately 15 minutes during the gala to perform.
2. While all applications will be given due consideration by the committee inquiries on the status of your application cannot be fielded by our office. We will contact the selected applicants only by May 1, 2010.
3. We cannot return any submission materials unless accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.
4. Technical/sound/lighting equipment in the theatre for the performance will be very minimal. We will ensure you are lit and heard but you must provide any additional or specialty equipment you may require.
5. All selected artists will be expected to self-organize their rehearsals/performance. Each will be given a short time slot to tech their piece in the theatre on June 4th. A stage manager (provided by Fairy Tales) will organize and facilitate this tech.
6. Selected artists must be opened to sharing their biographical information and work with the media for promotional purposes.

Do you have a tragic, interesting, ordinary, or funny Coming Out Story?
We want to hear it! All sexualities and gender identities are encouraged
to submit!

This year as a part of Queers on Campus Pride Week at the University of
Calgary, we want your stories to help us break the silence. Stories
submitted will be performed in an inspiring play called "The Coming Out
Monologues".

You are not required to perform your monologue and may choose to remain
anonymous. This is also a great opportunity for you budding thespians to
show off your talents, as we are also looking for actors to perform in the
play.

Focusing on the art, photography and performances of five "alternative" gender artists of Maori, Samoan-Japanese, and Pakeha-European descent, Assume Nothing poses the questions: "What if "male" and "female" are not the only options? How do other genders express themselves through art?"

Assume Nothing is inspired by acclaimed NZ photographer Rebecca Swan’s book “Assume Nothing”, which reveals an extraordinary diversity of gender identity from the Pacific region. Assume Nothing creates “living” portraits of four artists featured in Swan’s work, woven together by a portrait of Swan herself. The featured Maori, Samoan-Japanese, and Pakeha- European artists weave tales of growing up in gender identities that fall outside conventional Western definitions of masculinity and femininity.

Meticulously crafted, playful and provocative, Assume Nothing travels from Wellington’s Red Rocks to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to explore the potent creative world that flourishes between and beyond genders.

Fairy Tales Presentation Society is proud to present an evening with Vancouver-based multimedia artist, Paul Wong on Thursday January 28^th at the Glenbow Museum. The evening will include a presentation by Wong,
a screening of his recent works, and a look at his new Glenbow installation, 2 Hot 2 Handle, AND a swinging party at Mango Shiva afterwards.

An award-winning artist and curator since the 1970s, Wong’s work varies
from conceptual performances to narratives, meshing video, photography,
installation and performance. Wong’s latest exhibit, 2 Hot 2 Handle, was
inspired the Glenbow’s existing collection of bronze sculptures and his visit
to the 2009 Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo.

Jessica Dollard, Director of Fairy Tales Presentation Society says, “Paul Wong
is one of Canada’s most exciting multimedia artist. Fairy Tales is thrilled to
partner with Glenbow Museum to celebrate his work with the goal of building
the Calgary queer community around the arts and in support of artists.”

Wong has received several awards in his career including the Bell Canada Award
in Video Art in 2002 and a Governor General’s Award in 2005.  His video installation
work has been featured in exhibitions around the world, including an extensive
screening at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and a solo exhibition
at the National Gallery of Canada.

2 Hot 2 Handle is on January 28^th and will include video screenings of:
Perfect Day, a self-portrait of the artist indulging in drugs; EastVan John,
about a man displaced by gentrification; Sally, shot at the China Club in
Beijing; and the sexually charged Chelsea Hotel.
