Fairy Tales is excited to soon be announcing the successful applicant for our position of Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator. Thank you to all the individuals who sent submissions for the posting. We look forward to welcoming the newest addition to our team - check our website after February 15 for the announcement.

The FaiyZine is moving to a twice monthly send-out (early and mid-month), and we want to include your community news, events, or listings! Please send information in an email or .doc or .txt format to Kari at operations@fairytalesfilmfest.com at least two weeks prior to your event. There is no cost for this service.

We will have light refreshments and treats, and we invite members to bring edible delights if you wish. Our neighbors, EMMEDIA are also hosting their gathering at this time, so pop next door to visit EM. EMMEDIA is also screening "Output/Input" a selection of member's video works in the screening room, and we will have an informative short video about the Media and Visual Arts Housing Society (Fairy Tales is a member) in the hall.

We will be having a free draw for the complete box set of the U.K version of QUEER AS FOLK at 7PM! Only those who come to the party can enter this free draw, and we'll contact the winner that evening. 

After you have visited us, head down the street to the Old Y Centre to see the new digs of the Society of Independent Filmmakers and the M:ST Performative Art Festival Society. Both parties go from 6PM until late. If you are into Zine culture, be sure to see the SECOND ANNUAL ZINE FAIR at the Old Y Centre between Noon-5PM as well.

Following the wildly successful 2011 Youth Anti-Homophobia PSA Program, the Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival is partnering once again with EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society to create a media art creation program for youth in early 2012. The works will be considered for screening in the 2012 Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival. There is NO charge to participate!

 

LEARN THE ART OF FILMMAKING - with a GLBTQA Twist
Youths aged 12 – 24 from the Calgary area are eligible to participate by submitting their idea for a short film, animation or digital video piece that deals with GLBTQA themes. Fairy Tales and EMMEDIA will provide the training and equipment and help youth with submitting their pieces to festivals and for television and internet broadcast. All mentors leading the training will be working professionals within the media arts community. 

 

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR IDEA
This FREE program will start in December 2011, finishing in March 2012. Please send your idea for a short film, animation or digital video (max 15 minutes) to Melody Jacobson by e-mail: outreach@fairytalesfilmfest.com.

Not sure how? Ideas can be submitted in graphic novels or comic formats, storyboards, or just write your idea down! You can even make a YouTube video telling us what you want to do and why! Fairytales Presentation Society is pleased to welcome Melody Jacobson as our incoming Programming & Producing Director for Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival.  Melody will transition from her current role as Outreach Coordinator, working with outgoing Programming & Producing Director Jessica Dollard and Operations Director Kari McQueen to keep the high calibre of the Society.  She will begin her new role with us at the end of November, leading our team for the 14th Annual Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival May

24th - June 2nd, 2012. Jessica Dollard will also continue to be involved in a new capacity with Fairy Tales in the next year.

Melody brings a comprehensive knowledge of independent film and video to her role, with over 15 years experience with the arts in Canada as an advocate, programmer, administrator, and board member. She received the Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society's Spirit of Helen Award in 2009 for advocating for, and enriching Alberta Arts & Culture. Melody's past work has included the M:ST Festival, the Independent Media Arts Alliance, the Calgary Cinematheque Society, and The New Gallery. While at the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF), she played key roles in both the $100 Film Festival and in facilitating the move of Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival from a CSIF program to its own Society.

In this YouTube age, filmmaking really is a fantastic means of helping youth to find their voice, and discover the power of saying no to bullying and homophobia - together! It all started last year, with our Youth Anti-Homophobia PSA Program mentoring young filmmakers in the process of making an effective public service announcement. The PSA's addressed homophobia, inspired in part by It Gets Better, and by the work of the Calgary Police Service & Calgary's Outlink Youth Group in raising local awareness. It Gets Better Project founder, Dan Savage, attended the 2011 film festival in honor of PSA youth.

The Power of Community and Fairytales
We are eligible to receive funds from the (provincial) Community Spirit grant, which matches donations from individuals living in Alberta. The more donations we raise, the more matching funds we are elegible to receive! This is a wonderful opportunity to double the "bang for your buck" as an individual donor!

If you are not Albertan, we welcome your donation, which, although it cannot be applied to our grant, WILL be used in support of the Youth Queer Media Program. 
Through IndieGoGo we offer limited Perks Packages for donations at varying levels. Once all packages are claimed, they are gone! You can donate without choosing Perks if you wish, and in amounts smaller or larger than those suggested for Perks.

If you prefer to donate in person, we accept cheques by mail or at the office. 
We encourage you to choose as little or as much as fits your budget - every dollar counts! $5, $10, $1000... the sky is the limit. Donations for $20 and over will receive a charitable tax receipt.

The PSA Program successfully culminated in the public screening gala, Calgary Gets Better: One PSA at a Time, as part of the 2011 Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival. The show sold out, with over 300 in attendance to celebrate the accomplishments of these young artists! 
In 2012, we are re-launching the PSA Program as the permanent "Youth Queer Media Program", a FREE, annual program inviting youth to explore Queer issues through video, animation, narrative, or PSA formats and genres. 
Be a part of this exciting social movement to make things better for everyone!The program offers mentorship by media and film industry professionals and is FREE for participating youth. This is why we need your support!

Jessica brought incredible enthusiasm to our organization with a passion for film, people, and the arts. She worked tirelessly in bringing together and promoting Queer culture and the community through the arts and she steered our society through a period of active growth and success. 

Jessica writes, "My time at Fairy Tales from June 2009 – November 2011 has been filled with inspiration, challenges, and incredible success.  I have gained an abundance of experience and knowledge... Thank you very much for the wonderful opportunity to work with this organization.  I believe my work has had an enormous impact on this organization and that my time here was utterly successful."

It is with sincere, heartfelt thanks that Fairy Tales board and staff thank Jessica for her dedication, energy and passion for our organization, community and success. We all support Jess in her move, and wish her success in her endeavours!

SUMMARY: 

The Programming Director will work in a collaborative environment and is primarily responsible for planning and executing the annual Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival. This is a year-round, full time position, overseeing the Society’s artistic programming including the annual Film Festival, the annual Q the Arts Cultural Festival, as well as year-round screenings and arts events. The Programming Director also managing the Outreach Coordinator in implementation of ongoing outreach activities and programs, as well as temporary contract film festival staff. The incumbent uses creative, resourceful and dynamic strategies to convey the mission, vision and values of Fairytales Presentation Society in programming choices.
