About The Festival

The Fairy Tales staff are very excited to invite you to our annual film festival!

We are proud of our accomplishments and growth as we have become the largest as we continue to grow with our fun-filled, dynamic events.

Calgary has seen shift in the landscape of the queer community in recent years. With the explosion of stand-alone events and community projects we are seeing creative endeavors launched and embraced in new ways. Similarly, as we turn 16 years old in 2014, we are beginning to discover who we are and uncover the full potential of Fairy Tales as an organization.

Fairy Tales has grown from a 2 day Festival in 1998 to an organization which now hosts a successful 7-day Film Festival and 3 successful community based year round programs: The Youth Queer Media Program, OutReels Diversity Education Program and the Q the Arts Community Partnership Season.

This growth has been rapid, inspirational and allowed us to connect with all aspects of the community through film.  We would not be the organization we are now without the support of our board and stellar volunteers who are integral in bringing our vision forward. The Fairy Tales Programming Committee continues to be a driving force behind bringing unique and challenging queer film to Calgarian audiences with wit and humor.

Programming Committee
Our programming committee is a new and dedicated group appointed from a variety of community members, filmmakers, and board members to screen dozens of features and over 40 shorts each year. They put in hundreds of hours of work, meeting weekly for 5 months to discuss and ultimately curate our diverse and inclusive program. Their passion and incredible dedication to excellence each year is the driving force behind the festival. We look forward to meeting new people, making new friends and sharing in the experience of beautiful, challenging and representative new queer film.
