Dear Patrons, Sponsors, Volunteers, and Dedicated Film Enthusiasts,
Ten years ago Kevin Allen, Trevor Alberts and Kelly Langgard looked at the ashes of the short lived film festival The Fire I’ve Become and said, “There must be a way to create a queer film festival that will survive in Calgary”. We hope they look back with some degree of satisfaction knowing that their fledgling has learned to fly and for 10 years has been showing Calgary and Alberta the best in queer film and culture.
The little two day festival which started under the protective wing of the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers has turned into a 10 day festival that is, after the Calgary International Film Festival, the second biggest film festival in the city. When it was first started there were many who doubted that a queer film festival of that size and scope could be successfully established in Alberta let alone Calgary, but the on-going commitment of dedicated volunteers and sponsors have proven them wrong.
Fairytales is a festival that is appreciated by audiences and artists alike. It is a festival which garners respect from the great queer film makers of Canada and we have been fortunate to have their support. We have also been able to attract financial support from the Canada Council of the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Calgary Arts Development Authority, and the Calgary Foundation.
As Co-Presidents we delight in being able to welcome you, on behalf of the Board, to join in celebrating our 10th year of bringing the best in queer cinematic culture to Calgary, Alberta, and beyond. Enjoy the festival!

Dear Fairy Film Fanatics,
It’s time to celebrate a decade of exhibiting queer films to an Albertan audience by revisiting memorable films from the past, screening movies that missed us by the first time, and most importantly-- looking forward to the next ten years by showcasing some of the most innovative, talented, and dynamic filmmakers and their work from seventeen different countries.
We strive to represent persons of all races, ages, abilities, and physicalities in the same limelight as the 99% of heterosexual cinematic characters currently projected at your local multi-plex. Our programming fairies have been working magic overtime to ensure your festival experience is as diverse as our community truly is.
Please go out of your way to show some Southern Alberta hospitality to our celebrity guests; Thea Gill, Charlie David, Attila Richard Lukacs, Mark Kenneth Woods, Wrik Mead, mr.Pam, Bren Ryder, John Caffery, Alexis Mitchell, Trevor Anderson, Gerry Rogers and Linda Ludwick.
Click on programmes to see our exciting line-up and we’ll see you at the movies!
